back to APRIL 13, 1973: ANDY WARHOL IS ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL

Andy Warhol's gallstones

Diana Vreeland:

"I have never seen anything like it in my life, and I've seen a lot! Andy arrived with Fred [Hughes] and literally crumpled to the floor in the most excruciating pain imaginable! Somehow, we got him into the bedroom and onto the bed, and we called for an ambulance, which in New York is like sending out for Chinese food - I mean they take forever! Andy was writhing in pain, but quiet as a lamb. And what really touched me was to see how gentle Fred was with him, holding his hand and telling him that everything was going to be all right. But he was scared, Fred was. Very scared indeed." (BC166)

The hospital decided not to operate on Andy Warhol - instead treating him by diet and rest.
